Camera for a short

Gurus,
I have writtena feature that I want to shoot. But, before I do that I am trying to make a short to check my capabilities and weaknesses. I have a SONY TRV 22 and intend to buy a external mic ( Sony, $100) and shoot it.

The short has only two locations 1: Inside a house 2: by the river bank. Total number of scenes are 9.

Do you guys think that I should go ahead with thsi and edit it on my PC using one of those cheap editing softwares?

Any input and tips would be highly appreciated.

Go for it, even if it's just a crappy "first cut." Try shooting, editing and watching one of the indoor scenes (or any of the simple ones)...you'll be amazed at how much you can learn in that first attempt.

My siblings and I used to try to recreate scenes from movies we all knew well, like Raiders of the Lost Ark, Star Wars, Sound of Music (one of my sister's faves)...as close as we could to an exact duplicate. Of course, we chose simple indoor scenes with conversation, rather than big action scenes.

Anyway, there was always a lot of "Holy crap, I won't do that-and-that again!" and "Aha! We should've done this-and-that!" when we would watch the results. (And a lot of laughs, too.) You start to notice lighting in professional programs, compared with yours, or sound, or camera movement, and you try to find ways to fix it for the next shoot. Baby steps...but steps nonetheless.
